RUBY MYRTLE SYKES
Ruby Myrtle Sykes, 91, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.
Ruby was born on April 5, 1916, the daughter of Edward O. and Ada Glasgow Kelley in Kenwood, Missouri.
She attended grade school in Gibbs, Ethel and Hurdland, Missouri before graduating from the Hurdland High School in the class of 1934.
On May 4, 1935, in Macon, Missouri, Ruby married Albert Theodore “Teed” Sykes, and he survives of the home.
Ruby and Teed moved to Kirksville, Missouri in 1941 and have resided at the same address for the past 44 years. She was a member of the First Christian “Disciples of Christ” Church in Kirksville, Missouri and had been active as a Sunday school teacher for elementary school children, Women’s Christian Fellowship, Sarah Circle, Senior Fellowship, Assistant for Baptismal Services, and Deaconess for the church. She was a former member of the Sojourner’s Club, Life after Fifty, RSVP, Adair County Humane Society, and a charter member of the Sweet Adelines.
She enjoyed fishing, flower gardening and following the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball team.
Ruby is survived by her husband Albert “Teed” Sykes of Kirksville, Missouri; a daughter, Jackie and her husband, Zel Eaton of Kirkville, Missouri; a sister, Helen Hoggatt of Portland, Oregon; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt, along with a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Walter, Wilbur, Woodrow and Ward Kelley and a sister, Edith Jones.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 3, 2007 at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri.
Burial was in the Park View Memorial Garden in Kirksville, Missouri.
