VALLETTA M. SAMUELS

Valletta M. Samuels, age 81, of Keokuk, IA, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the Clark Co. Nursing Home in Kahoka where she had been a resident the past couple of months.

She was born January 3, 1926 at Wayland, MO, the daughter of Adrian and Mary Montgomery Spurgeon.

She married Merle Samuels who preceded her in death. Together they ran the Grand Lunch in Keokuk for many years.

Survivors include a brother, Harold Spurgeon and his wife, Mildred, of Wayland, MO; two nephews, Alan Spurgeon and his wife, Debbie, of Oxford, MS and Bruce Spurgeon and his wife, Karen, of rural Kahoka, MO; a great-niece, Emily Smeltser and her husband, Justin, and their daughter, Sydney of Alexandria, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Valletta was a graduate of Wayland High School and Gem City Business College.

She was very career oriented and worked for 40 years as an accountant at the former Shellor Globe, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed traveling and had taken many trips in earlier years and again following her retirement. She was a cat lover and her cats were a very important part of her life. She also loved working in her yard and gardening at her home in Wayland. Her family and friends were very important to her.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Frazee Cemetery, rural Alexandria, with Pastor Dan Steinbeck officiating.

Pallbearers were Alan Spurgeon, Bruce Spurgeon, Paul Luedtke, and Randy Fish.

Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home.Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to P.A.W.S.
