Canton and Knox County battled through five scoreless innings in varsity softball action at Canton. The October 6 contest was the final regular season game for Knox County. Canton (14-7) scored three sixth inning runs and claimed a 3-0 victory.
Both teams went down in order during their first inning at bats. Amanda Woods, Lorrie Peters and Kaley Sutton recorded consecutive one out base hits in the top of the second inning.
Lady Tiger pitcher Tori Niemann struck out a batter and threw out another at the plate on a force during the inning. Canton Catcher Jamie Janney fielded a bunt for the final out with no runs allowed. Knox County stranded four runners on the night.
Brittany Miller pitched around a one out second inning walk to Aron Taylor. Jessie Logsdon tripled with two down in the bottom of the fourth inning but was left on third base when Miller fanned a batter for the final out.
Jodi Poore singled for Knox County in the fifth inning but was left on base. Tori Niemann fanned two of her eight batters on the night in the sixth inning. Niemann walked leading off the Canton sixth inning.
Jamie Janney followed with a base hit. Two Canton runs scored on errors. Kara Uhlmeyer stroked an RBI single scoring Kaitlyn Caldwell for the third run of the frame.
The Lady Tigers fielded three ground balls in the KCHS seventh inning, nailing down the 3-0 win. Knox County (10-7) was blanked on five hits and three errors. Amanda Woods was 2-3 at bat leading Knox County.
Canton scored three times on four hits. Brittany Miller struck out seven batters in six innings pitched. Miller walked one batter and took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
“We put runners on, had them in scoring position and couldn’t get that big hit when we needed it,” said Knox County coach Stephanie Crawford. “We played a solid game. We had nothing to hang our heads about. It was one good team beating another good team.”
