Statement on GM Bankruptcy

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today made
the following statement about General Motors’ (GM) announcement that the company
is filing for bankruptcy protection.  GM’s announcement comes just weeks after
Chrysler entered bankruptcy.  GM employs thousands of Missourians at its plant
in Wentzville as well as at its plant in Fairfax,
Kansas, just outside Kansas City, Missouri. GM also indirectly supports
thousands of Missouri jobs at auto supply manufacturers in
the state.

“I’m looking forward to GM coming out of bankruptcy a
stronger, better company. Ultimately, I’m pleased that we’ve managed so far to
save important middle class jobs like those at the Wentzville plant and just
across the border at the Fairfax plant in
Kansas. I’m
also anxious for the U.S. automakers to no longer rely on
the federal government and, in the end, for the taxpayers to get their money
back,” McCaskill said.
