Locals Turn Out To Support Knox Co. Nutrition Site

By Echo Menges

The Knox County Nutrition Site hosted their annual Soup Supper fundraiser on Saturday, October 20, 2012. Freewill donations were given by attendees of the event to help support the site.

Amber Morgret, Gary and Janet Fagan proveded the music for the Knox County Nutrition Site’s annual Soup Supper on Saturday, October 20, 2012.

Local merchants and churches donated cakes, pies, cookie bars, and brownies and several different kinds of soup and sandwiches were provided by the center. Volunteers donated their time to serve at the event and Gary and Janet Fagan and Amber Morgret, 13, provided music. During the event special recognition was given to a memorial picture, plaque and wreath in honor of Jeanne Perrigo who served as the sites former Director and dedicated 28 years to the site.

“We had about 150 people attend the soup supper,” said the site’s Director Beth Bacon, “and it looks like the income will be around $1,800.”

The Nutrition Center serves one meal a day on site or by delivery Monday through Saturday. Seniors who need a meal on Sunday can have two on Saturday. For many local seniors the Nutrition Center provides the only real meal they get. According to Bacon the site is serving approximately 80 meals a day.

If a senior in the county can’t get to the site to eat they can call the center and a meal will be delivered to them. Anyone 60 years old or older can eat at the center or have a home delivery for a “suggested” modest donation of $3.00 a meal. Anyone under 60 years old can eat at the center for $6.25 a meal.

People who wish to donate to the center may do so by visiting the site Monday through Saturday between 8:00am and 1:00pm. Donations are always welcome and appreciated.
