Former Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested & Charged With Felony Stealing From Sheriff’s Office

Former Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy, Howard Smith, 40, of Edina was arrested in Knox County by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Tuesday morning, October 30, 2012, after a warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest by Knox County Associate Court Judge William E. Alberty on Friday, October 26, 2012.

Smith is charged with one Class C Felony count of Stealing and one Class C Felony count of Disposing of Stolen Property.

Smith was arrested and taken to the Lewis County Jail Tuesday, October 30, 2012 and placed on a $10,000 cash only bond.

 Smith has also been charged with a Felony count of Resisting Arrest By Fleeing by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

According to court documents Smith is accused of stealing police equipment, a police radio, from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and selling the item on the online sales website, E-Bay, on October 9, 2011. The case has been under investigation by MSHP’s Division of Drug and Crime Control since the beginning of the year.

The Edina Sentinel first reported this story, after it was leaked to the newspaper by trusted and reliable sources, in January of 2012 after Smith had been terminated from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith is being held at the Lewis County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
