Med Club Students Shadow Healthcare Providers at Memphis Medical Services
Two students from Clark County R – 1 High School recently took the initiative to make arrangements to shadow two healthcare providers at Memphis Medical Services. Cody Kice and Logan Doty both wish to pursue careers in healthcare. They are members of the newly formed MED CLUB at Clark County High School.
The MED CLUB, which is sponsored by Scotland County Hospital through a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health in four school districts, is focused on junior high & high school students pursuing future healthcare careers, through monthly meetings with healthcare professionals as guest speakers, healthcare profession mentors, field trips, a club website with healthcare career information and healthcare career fairs. All of this and more, with a goal of providing students information to prepare for and make a decision to pursue a career in healthcare. “I was thrilled when these MED CLUB students called to set up a day to shadow our providers,” stated Kristin Hyde, MED CLUB Grant Coordinator. “This is exactly the exposure and opportunity the MED CLUB program wants to offer any student wishing to pursue a career in healthcare. This shadowing experience in our facility is a perfect example of rural healthcare, which these young men wish to pursue as a career path.”
Logan & Cody, both Juniors at CCR-1, want a career as a Family Practice Physician in a rural area. Dr. Matt Cormier and Marilyn Day, FNP-C, gave these students the opportunity to see “a day in the life” of this career path when these students shadowed Cormier & Day at Memphis Medical Services. “I tried to expose them to as many patient types as possible,” said Dr. Cormier. “I showed them how I treat the whole patient and screen the patients for all kinds of possible diseases.” The students were most impressed with the technology at the clinic and the healthcare providers’ use of technology both in the exam room and all around the hospital and clinic.

Nearly 300 junior high and high school students are members of the Med Clubs in the four school districts of Schuyler, Scotland, Clark & Knox Counties. Hospital officials and school superintendents agreed that the MED CLUB programs in each school are an overwhelming opportunity to build the healthcare workforce for tomorrow, by investing today.
