Michael Wayne Bishop

Michael Wayne Bishop   CWO Michael Wayne Bishop age 78 of Edina, MO, died Thursday morning, October 10, 2013 at his residence in Edina, MO.

Born July 8, 1935 in Edina, MO, he was a son of Noble Lee and Velma Lee Kidwell Bishop.  Mike was united in marriage to Carol Lee Merrell on June 6, 1959 in Edina, MO.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Lee of Edina, MO; two sons: Mark Alan Bishop of Olathe, KS and Michael Lee Bishop and wife, Sheila and their two sons, Andrew Michael “Drew” and Austin David Bishop also of Olathe, KS; one brother and four sisters: Donna Stockham and fiancée Bruce Normile of Baring, MO, Sue Johnson and husband, Dick of Baring, MO, Mary Bishop, sister-in-law of Edina, MO, Dan Bishop and wife, Judi of Baring, MO, Janice McGinnis and husband, Mike of Edina, MO and Brenda Beckner and husband, Mike of Corydon, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jack and J.W. Bishop, one sister-in-law, Judy Bishop and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Stockham.

Mr. Bishop was a 1953 graduate of the Edina High School and attended one year of college at Kirksville State Teachers College in Kirksville, MO.  He served his country in the United States Army for twenty-three years, one month and sixteen days.  During his military career he served in Japan, Germany, Panama Canal and three tours of duty in Vietnam.  He received four bronze stars in 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971; the Air Medal in 1970, the Meritorious medals in 1976 and 1977; Army commendation medals in 1968, 1969 with 1st. Oak Leaf Cluster, 1970 with 2nd. Oak Leaf Cluster and 1973 with 3rd. Oak Leaf Cluster.

Mr. and Mrs. Bishop resided in Columbia, MO ten years where they raised their family before moving to Edina in 1987.  Mike was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service out of the Baring, MO office until his retirement.

He was a member of the Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post #261 of Edina, the Knox County V.F.W. Memorial Post #4822, the Baring Country Club, the Edina County Club and was a member and deacon of the Edina Christian Church.  Mike’s hobbies included yard work; especially mowing his beautiful lawn.  He thoroughly enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family, which he loved deeply.

Memorial services were held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.  Rev. Dewayne Wellborn and Rev. Maynard Blackwood officiated at the services.  Music will be provided by Brent Karhoff, soloist and Carol Hayes, organist.  Burial was in the Linville Cemetery at Edina, MO with military honors provided by the Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post #261 and the Knox County V.F.W. Memorial Post #4822 of Edina, MO.  Honorary bearers were Bruce Normile, Dick Johnson, Ryan Bishop, Dan Bishop, Mike McGinnis and Mike Beckner.

Memorials in memory of Mr. Bishop may be made to the Knox County Health Department, Hospice of Northeast Missouri, Linville Cemetery, Knox County Nutrition Center and or to the Knox County Relay for Life.  The memorials may be mailed to or left at Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O.
