KCR-1 Superintendent Asking for Slight Increase in Knox School Tax Levy – Public Meeting to be Held on August 16th

“Ten years ago the voters voted the tax ceiling be set at 3.700. We’re not asking for it to go that high, but we are asking for it to be taken to 3.6330,” said Knox County R-1 School District Superintendent, Andy Turgeon. ” For example, if you own a $100,000 home, you might see around a $13 increase for the year.”

A public hearing will be held at the district on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Knox County High School. Voters who wish to be heard on this matter should make plans to attend.

Mr. Turgeon released a letter and information to Knox County voters on Monday, August 8, 2016 to explain the proposed school tax levy increase. See below:

Dear Knox County Tax Payers,

   The Knox County R-I School District will have their tax hearing on Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Knox County R-I Board Room. I am proposing an increase to our current levy which has dropped over the past 10 years. Our operating levy 10 years ago was $3.7000 per $100 of assessed valuation. This past year we have seen our levy drop to $3.5597 per $100 of assessed valuation. This reduction is a direct result of our school board voting to voluntarily reduce our levy in 2011. 

   This reduction was left on during the following years, and I am proposing to lift the reduction in an effort to get our levy back to a comfortable operating level. With our State and Federal funding declining over the last several years, this would help cover some of those shortfalls.
