Betty M. Uhlmeyer Schreck

Betty M. Uhlmeyer Schreck passed away on Aug. 3, 2016, at the Lighthouse of West Bend in West Bend, Wis., where she had lived for the past five years.

Betty was born on March 14, 1929, in St. Patrick, Mo., to William J. and Anna Mae Uhlmeyer.

She spent her childhood in St. Patrick, graduating in 1948. There she married Kenneth Schreck on Aug. 28, 1948. Shortly after, they moved to Peoria, Ill., where they both worked for Caterpillar and started their family with two sons.

After several years, they moved back to Missouri to farm with Ken’s brothers and expanded the family with two daughters.

In 1958, she moved to Waterloo, spending a year there while Ken studied to become a barber. Upon his graduation, they moved to Keokuk, where she kept busy keeping house, raising children (adding two more) and participating in the activities they enjoyed (like dancing at the K.C.s and playing cards with friends). She was a member of All Saints parish, were she served on the Altar and Rosary Society for many years.

Betty worked as a housewares manager for Montgomery Ward in the Keosippi Mall for 13 years. Upon the stores’ closing, she went back to school to become a beautician, graduating from the Bill Hill Cosmetology School in Fort Madison. She then joined Ken by operating her salon – The Hair Place – in the same building as his, until retirement. In 2011, Betty moved to West Bend to live by her daughter Julie and husband Al.

Betty enjoyed gardening, traveling, visiting with friends and neighbors, reading, genealogy and, of course, keeping up with her children and grandchildren.

Betty is survived and will be greatly missed by her children, Rod Schreck of Manchester, Pamela (Bob) Stump of Port Orchard, Wash., Cindy (Vic) Gillett of Meridian, Idaho, Julie (Al) Padron of Kewaskum, Wis., and Dan (Renuka) Schreck of Austin, Texas. She also is survived by seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ken; her son, Leslie; her parents; brother, Alwin; sisters, Angeline Uhlmeyer and Isabel Wheeler; and several brothers-in-law.
