Drunk Man Falls Nearly 30 Feet While Trying to do Chin-Ups on Bridge, Stops Train Traffic, Lucky to be Alive

An old bridge in Knox County, known to locals as a late-night drinking and gathering spot, was the scene of an idiotic accident over the weekend.

The old wooden country bridge is located on Box Car Loop Road southwest of Baring, MO.

According to the Knox County Sheriff Allen Gudehus and Deputy Ryan Bishop, early Saturday morning, October 29, 2016, at approximately 3:00 a.m., emergency responders were called after a 32-year-old Green City man fell off of the wooden bridge.

The man was attempting to do chin ups off the side of the bridge and fell approximately 25 to 30 feet onto the train tracks below. He sustained moderate injuries including a broken leg, according to a report from an emergency responder.

Train traffic was stopped for approximately 30 minutes while emergency responders removed the man from the tracks.

He was drunk, according to the Sheriff.

“He’s lucky he didn’t die,” said Sheriff Gudehus.

The man was not cited for any violations of the law at the scene.

“I’d say he’s looking at criminal trespassing charges from the railroad. It’s up to the railroad on whether they want to pursue trespassing charges. Unfortunately, we don’t have any charges for a person being drunk (and dumb). Trespassing would be the only thing he could face,” said Sheriff Gudehus.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County Rescue Squad and Knox County Ambulance District responded to the call.

We have chosen not to release the name of the man as he is not facing any criminal charges.
