Cold Temperature Warning – Information from the Knox County Health Department

Knox County, MO – January 29, 2019 – The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for Knox County Missouri through 9am CST Thursday morning.  Per the NWS, dangerously cold wind chills are expected, and can reach as low as 35 to 40 below zero.  These temperatures can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, and hypothermia and death are possible if precautions are not taken.  If you must venture outdoors, be certain to dress properly, with several layers of light-weight, loose fitting clothing and make sure that all skin is covered.

For those in our area who are caring for livestock, or have outdoor related jobs try to work in pairs, or  assure that someone knows where you are and when you should be expected.  Rural roads are hazardous at this time, and every precaution and preparation should be taken when out.  Please make sure that your auto and home fuel tanks are sufficiently full for long run times and assure that cell phones and other communication devices are fully charged.

Knox County Health Department and the county emergency management team ask that those in our rural area check on their neighbors and family members and assist where they can.  And if anyone is in need of a warming shelter or assistance, that they call the county health department at 660.397.3396 and dial 1 for on-call staff.   The county has identified volunteers to check on residents and a warming shelter for those in need and can direct individuals with notification.
