Rayl Named Principal At South Shelby
Knox County R-1 Band Director and High School Teacher Matt Rayl has accepted an administrative position at South Shelby High School. Rayl will join the Cardinals as the new High School Principal this summer ahead of the 2019-20 school year.
The Shelby County Herald reached out to Shelby County R-IV Superintendent Tim Maddex and Matt Rayl about the hire. Those Q&A interviews are included below:
Q&A with Superintendent Tim Maddex
1) When was Matt Rayl hired on as South Shelby High School Principal?
Matt was hired at the special board meeting on March 21st, 2019.
2) Why was Matt Rayl chosen to fill the position as the High School Principal?
Matt brings a passion for students, staff and community to Shelby County R-IV Schools. Matt has been in education for 20 plus years with roles as a teacher, coach and administrator. His primary goal is to help every student achieve their goals and empower the student to do so.
3) How excited are you to bring Rayl to South Shelby?
Matt brings a student focused leadership style to the district, just as his predecessor Mr. Windsor did. For Matt it will be first about meeting and developing relationships with staff and a rapport with the students. Any time you have a student focused leadership team it is exciting.
4) What are the duties for a High School Principal?
First and foremost is being the instructional leader for the high school. This also means leading the support staff that helps all staff and students achieve high goals. The High School Principal is also expected to be involved with the students by attending and support events for the school and community.
5) When will Rayl start his position at South Shelby?
Mr. Rayl will begin is official duties on July 1st, 2019.
Q&A with incoming SSHS Principal Matt Rayl
- What is your favorite part about working in education?
My favorite part would definitely be working with students. I enjoy working with all students, whether it be teaching them to play an instrument in band, or coaching them in a sport, or watching them be successful in academics. I encourage all students to get involved in school, whether it be in fine arts, athletics, vocational classes, or any other clubs the school offers. I think education is one of the best jobs a person can have. Every day you learn something new. No two days are alike. I learn just as much from the students, as they learn from me. I strive to make learning fun for students along with high expectations. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing young people grow and be successful and know they are going to do great things when they become adults.
- Why did you decide to accept the position at South Shelby?
South Shelby has a great reputation for both academic achievements and extra-curricular activities. I am excited to work at a school that has great administration, staff, and students. I also feel the school has a great positive climate and a community that is very supportive.
- What are your educational credentials?
I have a Bachelors of Music Education from Culver Stockton College and a Masters of Educational Leadership in Secondary Administration from William Woods University.
- What is your previous professional experience?
I have taught Instrumental Music for 22 years in Knox County, Moniteau County, and Putnam County. I have been an Athletic Director for 6 years. I have been a Performing Arts Center Director for 3 years. In my 22 years as an educator, I have also coached HS Baseball, HS Softball, HS Golf, and JH Football. I have also driven a bus for the last 12 years for school activities.
- What are your goals in this position?
My short-term goals are to get to know the students, staff, and community and build those relationships. I will strive to continue the success that South Shelby High School has had academically and in extra-curricular activities. I will also take a look at anything that can make the high school better to ensure we give the students the best high school experience and education possible.
- Are you planning to reside in the district?
I plan on moving to the Shelbina area and have my kids go to South Shelby. I have a son who will be in 7th grade next year and a daughter who is 3. My wife has also been an elementary teacher for 18 years. We look forward to being part of the community.
