Events such as the May 22, 2021 Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1 Track and Field Championships are a forum where history can be and is made. Green City freshman Asher Buggs-Tipton introduced himself to sports followers all over Missouri and likely the Midwest when he won every event he was allowed to participate in.
Asher Buggs-Tipton won gold medals in the MSHSAA 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Tipton won the boys long jump and triple jump events. Green City won the boys Class 1 team championship with 87 points. The Gopher boys 4x200m relay team won their event in state record time.
“I thought it was a little rough in the beginning,” Asher Buggs-Tipton said after the 110m hurdles. “I started getting better with each hurdle. I finished strong and did my best. I have been doing AAU (Track and Field) since second grade.”
“My goal has always been to win state. The hard work me and my Dad have put in has paid off,” Tipton said. “I wouldn’t be anywhere without him. He trained with me every day. He pushes me.”
Asher Buggs- Tipton responded to a reporter’s question regarding freshmen winning state champions. “Not very many freshmen work as hard as me,” the Green City ninth grader said. God gave me the gifts to achieve these things. I thank Him so much for that.”
“All of my supporters over there in pink helped me to go faster,” Asher Buggs-Tipton said of a large group of Green City community members and fans. “I want to thank that group for supporting me.”
Knox County senior Coltin Morrow has signed to run track for Hannibal-LaGrange University. Morrow graduated from Knox County High School the next day adorned with three state track medals.
“Track is the one that I have excelled at most,” Coltin Morrow said in response to a reporters inquiry about the success Knox County athletic teams have had this season. “Getting to state again this year after not having a season last year and competing for that top two (finish) and having a great athlete ahead in Asher. It’s just been an incredible, fun season.”
“A lot of times you see the seniors progress and their times progress,” Coltin Morrow said. “Asher (Buggs-Tipton) coming in. He is just a freak, insane athlete. I can’t wait to see how he progresses through the years.”
