The Mystery of Palmyra’s Blue Lights: A Journey Through Time
By Doug Meyers Director of Parks & Recreation, City Of Palmyra
For decades, the blue Christmas lights of downtown Palmyra have enchanted residents and visitors alike, casting their tranquil glow over Main Street. But the story of these lights is more complex than many realize, with twists and turns that span generations. The tradition began in 1940, when Bert Oliver, the superintendent of the Light and Water Department, first installed the lights. Back then, the bulbs weren’t manufactured as blue— they were clear bulbs hand-painted in a rich, tranquil blue. By the late 1950s, time had taken its toll on the paint, and the bulbs began to show their age. Chips in the paint created a speckled effect, allowing tiny flecks of bright white light to peek through. The next year, someone carefully touched up the paint, restoring the canopy to its full brilliance. In the 1950s, the blue canopy extended all the way to the four-way stop at Ross Street, crisscrossing the intersection and creating a breathtaking display. At the same time, Bradford pear trees adorned downtown Palmyra, their branches covered in glowing gold lights. Together, the blue canopy above and the golden glow below transformed Main Street into a magical holiday scene, a sight that residents still reminisce about fondly. Yet, there was a time when the blue lights disappeared. From the late 1960s through 1974, they were replaced with lighted decorations like snowmen, Santas, and other festive figures adorning the poles. But Palmyra is a town that loves its traditions, and the blue lights were destined for a comeback. In 1974, council member John Buckman proposed the return of the blue lights to Main Street. The council agreed, and the lights returned, alongside red lanterns that lined Main Street. This stunning display stretched from the co-op to the north end, wrapped around the courthouse, and continued down to Robey Robinson Lumber on West Main Cross. Today, the addition of LED technology has elevated the display to new heights. The brilliance and clarity of these modern lights amplify the timeless charm of Palmyra’s holiday tradition, ensuring that the blue canopy continues to dazzle. These lights are more than decorations— they’re a reflection of Palmyra’s resilience and dedication to community. Whether you remember the original canopy, the glowing Bradford pear trees, or the era of snowmen and Santas, each generation has contributed to the legacy of our town’s holiday spirit. This season, I’d like to extend a warm invitation to anyone in our neighboring towns to come experience the magic of Palmyra’s downtown during the holidays. Take a stroll under the blue canopy, and while you’re here, be sure to visit one of our charming downtown restaurants, coffee shops, drink spots, or unique stores. There’s something special waiting for everyone in Palmyra, and we’d love to share our holiday
