Scotland County Farm Bureau to Celebrate “Thank a Farmer Week”
The Scotland County Farm Bureau joins with the Missouri Farm Bureau in celebrating the Agriculture community by hosting events throughout the first week of March, known as “Thank a Farmer Week”.
The Scotland County Commissioners signed a proclamation on February 19 to honor this occasion. There are over 1.9 million farms in the United States. Statistics from the Missouri Department of Agriculture show that there are 87,887 farms in Missouri producing agriculture products on 27,000,000 acres. The average farm size is 308 acres and 96% of those farms are family owned.
The economic impact agriculture provides to the state amounts to $336.63 billion and provides 456,618 jobs to the state. One farm provides 169 people their food and fiber needs. The average consumer spends only 11% of their disposable income on food.
Bill Cottrell, Scotland County Farm Bureau president, says that less than 2% of the U. S. population is involved in production agriculture and the average age of the Missouri farmer is 58. Information from this article will be used to develop a quiz that will be used at Lacey’s Diner, Keith’s Café and the Catfish Place. A farm bureau member will be at those locations to hand out the quiz. The first two people to answer the quiz correctly at those locations will have their meal paid for, courtesy of the Scotland County Farm Bureau.
To further celebrate the week, members of the farm bureaus from Scotland, Schuyler and Adair counties will be on Coffee Break March 5th. Members from the Scotland County Farm Bureau donated three books, one each for the 1st, 3rd and 5th grades, to the elementary SCR-I schools on Monday, March 3.
