June 12, 1901

Last Wednesday morning H. Courtright, living southerly of this city came to Palmyra and after dinner traveled home.Just at the edge of town he was overtaken by a storm and stopped at the home of W.N. McElroy, where he remained overnight. Mr. Courtright is 88 years of age and while hale and hearty, for a while his family feared his strength might have failed him and much uneasiness was felt for his safety.
J.M. Sosey and Odon Rogers left Thursday for a trip through Texas and the Indian Territory for the benefit of their health. The length of their trip will be regulated by the benefit they receive from it.
The wind last Wednesday twisted the framework of Thos. Bryan’s new house considerably out of shape on the foundation. It was put back in shape without a great deal of trouble, however.
Aug. Berghoefer, who is soldiering in the Philippines, set John A Baker and Joe Retti, Jr., each a box of fine cigars and they reached here this week. Mr. Baker set ‘em up to the Spectator office and they went well.
Isaac D. Slough and Miss Lula Duvall, both of this county, were married last Thursday. ‘Squire J.S. Connell performed the ceremony at his home in Fabius.
Miss Ida Fagan is home for vacation. She will teach school in Shelby county again this winter.
Miss Maggie Smith has a position in a private family to do sewing in Bozeman, Montana, receiving $1.25 a day.

Mortz Happel, a well known farmer living several miles north of this city, received a painful injury on Wednesday evening of last week when a mule struck him in the face with his head.
The wedding of Miss Marjorie Thomas and Mr. Wallace G. Gray is announced to take place on the 17th of June.
Misses Marie and Lucile Bowen of Williamstown have been recent guests of Miss Gelletta Foster.
Mrs. R.L. West and little son of this city, have been the recent guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowles of New London.
Gray Snyder, a prominent attorney of Lewis county, and well known in Palmyra, is a candidate for Prosecuting Attorney.
J.E. (Ebbie) Owsley, who formerly operated a drug store in Palmyra has gone into business in Shelbyville.
Miss Alice Betty Hansbrough, who last week graduated fromthe Linwood college at St. Charles, has returned to her home in this city.
Mrs. Geo. Moeller, Misses Cornelia Weidhaas and Leona Stuetzer leave Thursday for a visit in St. Louis and to attend the dedication of the New Lutheran Seminary, Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Ashmore and daughter, Catherine, of Quincy, William Glendinning and wife of Taylor and Mrs. Belle Bashore of this city spent Sunday with Mrs. Anna Keck and daughter, Mrs. Hallie Wiseman.

Through the cooperation of the Marion County Court and the City of Palmyra, a special arrangement of flood lights have been installed at the courthouse. One set illuminates the statue of justice, and two other large reflectors are set on buildings across the street east of the courthouse, concentrating on the front lawn of the square.
Miss Sara Kathleen Lee, representing St. Paul’s Church School, will attend the Missouri-West Missouri Summer Conference at Christian College, Columbia, from Sunday, June 15 to Friday, June 20.
Barbara Jean Ragar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ragar, of Palmyra, submitted to a tonsillectomy at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal, Monday morning.
Mrs. J.E. Dixon delightfully entertained with a dessert-bridge at her home in Hannibal, Thursday evening, honoring Miss Anne Wiley White whose marriage to Herbert F. Lucke will take place Sunday, June 22.
Miss Ada Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Wilson, and John Warren Church, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Church, were married at 7:30 o’clock Saturday evening, June 7, at the home of the officiating minister, the Rev. C. E. Griswold. Both young people are popular in this community. A wedding dinner was enjoyed in the home of the bride’s parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gash, of Goddard, Kansas, formerly of Palmyra, are the parents of a daughter, born Monday, June 9, at the home of Mrs. Gash’s parents, near Bethel, Missouri.

Gene and Irene Riney, new owners of Flower City Florist, are having a grand opening and “Get-Acquainted Week” June 21-26, featuring a red-tag sale. Gene and Irene and employees invite everyone to come in and register for free door prizes.
The Ray Mannigel family was recently honored as the Marion County 4-H Bicentennial Family in Kansas City. Family members are Ray, Katharine, and their children, Sarah, David, and Linda Mannigel Schmitz.
W. Thomas Lemons, D.D.S., announces that he will open offices Monday, June 21, at 320 S. Main, formerly the offices of Dr. J.P Heitman, who has retired.
Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Elliott and Mark, Mike Church, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Appel and Tracy and Marcia Million returned June 9 from a camping vacation. They traveled in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado, and were gone for about two weeks.
Ava Morris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Morris, 122 W. North Street, was year old on June 3. To celebrate the occasion a family party was held in the home of her parents. Birthday cake and ice cream were served.
Mr. and Mrs. Dewayne Larenson of Philadelphia are the parents of a daughter born on Tuesday evening, June 1, 1976, in Levering Hospital at Hannibal. She weighed 8 pounds, 7-1/2 ounces and has been named Charity Lynette.
Mr. and Mrs. Galen V. Howard, Cambridge, Ohio, are announcing the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Gail Marie, to Bruce Anthony Tuley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin C. Tuley, also of Cambridge.

The Palmyra City Council approved on Thursday to go ahead with an already budgeted 5 percent overall boost in pay for city employees.

After negotiating for several weeks, the Marion County sheriff’s department will be getting computer equipment. The proposal from Computer Plus, a company out of Jefferson City, calls for eight stations, all hardware, software, and networking necessary at a cost of $60,706.
William and Shirley Davis, Taylor, MO, will be observing their 40th wedding anniversary on June 24, 2001. Mrs. Davis is the daughter of Eula Thomas, Taylor, and the late Earl Thomas. Mr. Davis is the son of Frances Davis of Quincy, Illinois, and the late Elmer Davis.
Herbert and Alice Schartz celebrated 25 years of marriage on June 12, 2001. Herbert Schwartz and the former Alice Bross were married on June 12, 1976, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen Merold and Rev. E.H. Donohue officiating. Mrs. Schwartz is the daughter of Doris and the late L.N. Bross. Mr. Schwartz is the son of Alma and the late Harold Schwartz.
Vernon L. and Gilberta Rayl, Palmyra, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 16, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, hosted by the couple’s children and grandchildren. Mr. Rayl is the son of the late Frank and Hazel Rayl, Labelle, and Mrs. Rayl is the daughter of the late Theodore and Carrie Stice, Lewiston
