Schuyler R-1 Approves Budget, Sets Tuition Rate
QUEEN CITY, Mo. — The Schuyler R-1 Board of Education approved the district’s 2026-27 budget and handled several annual housekeeping items during its regular meeting June 17.
The board met at 6 p.m. with President Jill Moncrief presiding. Board member Marti McGoldrick was absent. The board approved the agenda, minutes from the May 19 meeting, bills and the monthly financial report.
Director of Finance Tiffany Newland reported total revenue of $677,193 and total expenses of $820,758 for May. The board also voted to amend the 2025-26 revenue and expenditure budget so all budgeted revenue and expenditures are equal, allowing final payment of 2025-26 bills through June 30 and any needed transfers.
The board then approved the proposed 2026-27 budget.
During new business, the board approved eligibility criteria for free and reduced-price meals for the 2026- 27 school year. Board members also approved extra-duty assignments for Joel Shipman as boys golf coach and Brad Moncrief as assistant varsity girls softball coach. Jill Moncrief abstained from the vote on Brad Moncrief’s assignment.
Jennifer Miller was approved as a substitute teacher for the 2026-27 school year, and Mary Jones and Lisa Nagel were approved as bus drivers.
The board set the tuition rate for nonresident students at $13,500 per year and approved Prairie Farms as the district’s milk contractor for the upcoming school year. Members also approved the 2026-27 facility plan, strategic plan, preventative maintenance provider Winger, the district’s authorized representative, directors and coordinator list, and the alternative methods of instruction plan.
The employee manual, student-parent handbook and a proposal related to monitoring the HVAC system were tabled until the next board meeting.
Elementary Principal Katie Wayman reported May enrollment of 360 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade, compared with 347 in May 2025. May attendance was 96.35 percent, with year-to-date attendance at 94.5 percent. She also reported that 88.7 percent of students met the 90/90 attendance standard, meaning they were in school at least 90 percent of the time.
Wayman said summer school had concluded, with kindergarten students taking part in water activities and first- through sixth-grade students visiting the Unionville Community Pool. She also noted that Mrs. Kaden represented Schuyler Elementary at the PBS Summer Institute on June 10.
High School Principal Ed Koser reported May enrollment of 247 students and year-to-date enrollment of 268. May attendance was 93.58 percent, with year-to-date attendance at 94.15 percent. Koser also reported that Deacon Schoonover won a national championship and that summer weights were underway with about 60 students attending.
Athletic Director Laci Tallman reported summer workouts were underway with good attendance. She said the district has launched the FinalForms application, with more than 50 athletes already signing in and completing forms online. Tallman also reported that 2026-27 athletic schedules are set, with homecoming scheduled for Sept. 11 and Courtwarming scheduled for Jan. 15.
Superintendent Shawn Corbett congratulated Schoonover on his SkillsUSA national title and thanked Kyle Windy for his years of service to Schuyler R-1 students, staff and parents. Corbett also reported that facility upgrades remain on schedule, including floor epoxy, office updates, teacher furniture, and resurfacing work on the track and surrounding areas.
Upcoming dates include campus closures July 20 for Schuyler County emergency personnel training and July 21 for Highway Patrol training. New staff orientation is scheduled for Aug. 12, professional development days are Aug. 17-21, open house is Aug. 20 and the first day of school is Aug. 24.
The tentative July board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 15.
