The weather for the past two weeks has been excessively hot and the prospects for moderation do not seem very favorable. The mercury has ranged from 99 to 102 in the shade and keeping comfortable is anything but an easy job.
The members of the North River Lutheran Church are building a parsonage for their pastor. The foundation was completed last week and the carpenters commenced work Monday.
Last Sunday at the union meeting held at the Baptist church, Rev. L. J. Marshal, the pastor of the Christian church, stated that several young men had asked him if he would consider it an impropriety to come to church that evening in shirt waists. He said that he told them he certainly would not, and he was glad to notice that they were then in the house looking much cooler and more comfortable than those clad in regulation Sunday attire. He then invited all the men present who desired to do so to take off their coats and several accepted the invitation and sat through the service in their shirt sleeves.
Mrs. Annie Lovelace has returned from a visit to Quincy relatives and friends.
The marriage of John A. Menger and Miss Kate L. Englehardt took place in St. Louis last Thursday. The groom is a son of Geo. Menger of this vicinity, and the bride is the daughter of Chris Englehardt of Palmyra.
Little Miss Jewell Gupton of Philadelphia is visiting her uncle, Volney Gupton and family of this city.
Mr. Butler and family are enjoying a telephone. It was put in Monday by Rev. T. S. Scott.

The marriage of Miss Iva Muder and Dewey Dick was solemnized at the home of the bride’s parents in this city Sunday morning at ten o’clock… At noon a number of relatives and friends gathered at the residence to help celebrate the fifty-fifth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. And Mrs. J. H. Muder, grandparents of the bride.
James Madison Kenney, for many years a resident of this city county and known to his many friends as “Mad,” died at his home in the northern part of this city Sunday afternoon at four o’clock following a lingering illness. He was born near Woodland on December 2, 1860 and was a son of James M. And Nancy Foreman Kenney, who were early settlers of this county. He was married to Miss Sara V. Earhart. Besides his wife, he is survived by eleven children.
Mrs. Belle Bashore is the guest this week of relatives near Emerson and Benbow.
Last Sunday a number of relatives of the Schade family gathered at South Park in Quincy to spend the day. There were about 94 present.
Mrs. Roy B. Pollard and Miss Lois Suter were visitors in Hannibal one day last week.
Mr. And Mrs. Gerald Smith are the parents of a baby son, born Friday morning at the home of her parents, Mr. And Mrs. P. A. Bross, of North of Palmyra.
Miss Frances B. Gaines, daughter of Chester Gains of Philadelphia, and James W. Glendinning of near Taylor were married Sunday, June 20.

Leslie Pugh, son of Mr. And Mrs. Arch Pugh, addressed the Kiwanis Club of Palmyra during the regular luncheon meeting Thursday, telling of his recent experiences at Boys State in Fulton.
The marriage of Miss Alice Kay Lemon, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. R. H. Lemon, and Stephen L. Dearing, son of Mr. And Mrs. Moss Dearing, took place at the home of the bride’s parents in Palmyra, Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock. The wedding took place on the wedding anniversary of the bride’s parents.
Miss Mildred Englehardt of Kansas City, is visiting her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Theodore Englehardt.
Miss LaVanche Swisher of Missoula, Montana, is the guest of Mr. And Mrs. Harold Ragnar and daughter, Barbara Jean.
Boyd Lee Moody, son of Mr. And Mrs. Harold Moody of Kirksville, is spending this week with his grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Lee Thornburg and Mr. And Mrs. Boyd Moody.
Miss Ruth Wilson is expected to return today after several days visit in Jefferson City. During her absence Miss Virginia Ruth Riegel has been assisting at the Palmyra State Bank.
Mrs. Gladys Stratton was a patient in St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal.
Mr. And Mrs. John Harris of Clarence are the parents of a son born Saturday in June.
Mr. Harris, a former resident of Palmyra, is a brother of Mrs. Ennis Sears of this city.
Mr. And Mrs. Herbert Lucke have returned from a wedding trip during which they visited points in Missouri and Illinois.

Hot, dry weather has vailed in the Palmyra area the past few weeks, and during the past week crop have reached the bottom line of becoming critical. The weather has allowed farmer to make short work of the wheat harvest. Last week at publication time, there were no reports of the crops to be cut, by Tuesday instructions are more than 75 percent of the crop had been harvested.
Miss Patricia Ann and Dennis Lawler were united in marriage on Friday evening, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Palmyra.
A carry-in birthday dinner for Ira Buckwalter, who is to be 90 years old on July 3, was held at the Bay de Charles on Sunday, June 27.
Miss Ruth Ann Harris, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Clifford Harris, has joined staff at Camp Paquotce in Nauvoo, Illinois. She is serving as a camp counselor for the next few weeks.
Mr. And Mrs. Alan King, Stafford, Virginia, are the parents of a baby girl, Andrea Lee, born June 26. The maternal grandparents are Mr. And Mrs. J. W. Huckabee, Palmyra.
Marine Pvt. Gary Pyle, son of Mr. And Mrs. Howard of Route 1, Palmyra has graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. He is now stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.
Change of ownership of Western Auto Associate Sales in Palmyra has announced this week by the new owners, Robert and Shirley Rorison, Wentzville.

Coming next Monday, area residents will have another choice when it comes to health care. The Palmyra Clinic, sponsored by Blessing Hospital and Quincy Medical Group, will be opened for businesses and accepting appointments.
The wedding of Beverly Jean Worland and Jason Lewis Wenzel took place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Palmyra. The bride is the daughter of John and Ann Caryl Worland, Palmyra. The groom is the son of Kevin and Teresa Wenzel, Vandalia.
Poole Reed Creative, formerly known as Poole Advertising, is pleased to announce that it has opened a new office in Quincy. Joint partners, Sally Poole Bach and Kevin Reed, made the announcement.
The Summer Reading Club Entertainment program on Wednesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. will be Keith Haddrill, magical ventriloquist.
