Maywood News

We had more hot and humid weather this week, but we had some relief with rainfall over the weekend.  The blackberries are very sweet, and I think the raccoons, coyotes, and birds are eating them faster than we can pick them!

South Union Baptist Church gathered for worship today, and Brother Dan’s message was entitled “God Will Provide,” from Genesis, chapter 22.  Congregational singing included “God will Take Care of You” and “I Need Thee Every Hour.”   The Sunday school children learned about the anointing of Saul as the first King of Israel,   and they did a fun word search in their lesson book.  Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m., the worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., and all are welcome!

The Maywood community mourned the unexpected death of Jimmy Mathes this week.  Jimmy was the owner of Mathes Trucking and hauled rock and other material to many area farms and homes.  Sympathy is extended to his wife, Holly, his mother, Lavon, as well as Jimmy’s brothers, children, and extended family and friends.

The community also mourned the death of LillyJean “LJ” Roberts this week.  Lilly was the nine-year-old  daughter of Austin and Courtney (Miller) Roberts, and she touched many lives in the area during her lifetime.  The Poker Run to benefit the Roberts family remains scheduled for August 15th, and more information about the fundraiser is available on Facebook.

I enjoyed visiting with Marvin Tuley at the Hannibal Wal-Mart on Saturday.  Marvin continues to recover from significant health issues, and he told me that his grandson, Wyatt, has reported for Basic Cadet Training for the Air Force Academy in Colorado.  Wyatt is a talented area musician and will continue attending the Air Force Academy upon his completion of the cadet training.

I also enjoyed visiting with LeaAnn (Stalder) Waters and her daughter Jaclyn at Wal-Mart.  LeaAnn and I spent many Sundays as children sitting in church together and asking our mothers to let us spend the afternoon at each other’s houses until we returned for Sunday evening church.  We occasionally played doll house during the service using the hymnal rack and torn up bulletins, and if we became disruptive, my Uncle Larry did not hesitate to thump the back of my ear!  I couldn’t help but think about those fun after-church memories today when Jacob, Luke, and Elijah spent the afternoon after church with their cousin Bennett and the  Denish (Rathbun) and Rodriguez children.  The adults enjoyed visiting in the air conditioning while the children shot water guns and made the Slip and Slide slicker with Dawn Dish Soap!  Next time, we’ll remember to use baby shampoo to be gentler on the eyes!

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”
