PARATHENA L. CAHALAN
Parthena Louise “Pat” Cahalan, 97, of Edina, Missouri, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.
Pat was born on April 13, 1911, near Philadelphia, Missouri, the daughter of William Leslie and Alice Adelaide Buckley Powell.
She grew up in Marion County, Missouri and attended the Prairie Rural School before moving to Quincy, Illinois and graduating from the Gem City College in 1929. Pat moved to Edina, Missouri and worked as a bookkeeper for Swift & Company and met her future husband.
On September 1, 1934 in Edina, Missouri, Parthena married James William Cahalan and to this union two sons were born. In 1938, Kay Kinder, a niece, came to live with them after her father passed away. Jim and Pat raised her as a daughter for the next sixteen years until her mother, Lulu, remarried.
Pat and James owned and operated the Phillips 66 Station at the corner of 2nd Street and Lafayette Street and the Highway Appliance and Hardware Store next door from 1953 until their retirement in 1976. They later sold to Franks Appliance that continues today.
Pat is survived by two sons, Donald Lee and his wife Ginger Cahalan of Leawood, Kansas and James Edward Cahalan of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren, Deborah and her husband Jeff Nelson of Olathe, Kansas, Sherri and her husband Pete Jackson of Leawood, Kansas, Tim and his wife Cris Cahalan of Leawood, Kansas, Pat and his wife Melissa Cahalan of Thousand Oaks, California and Brian and his wife Robyn Cahalan of Little Rock, Arkansas; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces, nephew, cousins and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alice Powell; husband, James William Cahalan on January 30, 1987; a sister, Lulu Powell-Kinder-Smith; and two brothers, Thomas and Richard Powell.
Funeral Services were Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.
Visitation was after 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Burial was in the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery in Edina, Missouri.
Father Joseph Hoi and Brother Jerry Elmore officiated and Nancy Reardon and Brent Karhoff provided music. Casket Bearers were Steve Cahalan, Gary Cahalan, Mark Cahalan, Junior Crabtree, Frank Crabtree, Brian Cahalan, Pat Cahalan, and Tim Cahalan.
