Be Aware Of Road Closings Due To Flooding

Due to current water levels and more rain in the forecast, several routes are closed in Northeast Missouri due to flooding.   In addition, there are other roads that have the potential to be flooded.  Please see below for a list of travel ways impacted at this time.

U.S. 61 in Clark County at Alexandria – CLOSED – Water is approximately 3 inches over the road and rising.  It is more than likely the road could be closed into next week.

Knox County – CLOSED – Route K and Route V.  These should reopen by the end of the week, depending on local rainfall.

Lewis County – CLOSED – Missouri Route B/ U.S. Business 61 north of Canton. The city of Canton has installed the flood wall.

MoDOT recommends allowing extra travel time if detours are necessary.  “We are monitoring all roads and getting prepared for roads that could be impacted further by the rising waters of the Mississippi River,” said MoDOT Maintenance and Traffic Engineer Jennifer Hinson, P.E.  “It is likely we will have to close Missouri Route 79 in Louisiana and south of Clarksville, as well as Route E in Saverton; we are also closely watching MO 79 south of Hannibal,” she added.

If you have to travel, please remember these safety tips:

  • Watch for water on the roadway and slow down.
  • If a road is closed due to flooding, do not drive through.
  • Low water crossings are among the most dangerous spots. Never attempt to cross one that is flooded.
  • Never drive past a barricade closing flooded roads. They are there to protect you.
  • If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground because rapidly rising water may engulf the vehicle and sweep it away.
  • In the rain, if your wipers are in use, your headlights should be on too. It’s the law.
  • Please reduce your speed and don’t use your cruise control when it is raining.
  • Give trucks extra room in rainy conditions.
  • Using headlights makes your vehicle much more visible to truck drivers.

Drivers are encouraged to check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map, located at www.modot.org, or call the department’s toll free number, 1-888-ASK-MODOT, to get updated information on road conditions. The Traveler Information Map is also available as a free app for Android and Iphones.
