Fast Start Lifts Monroe City Past Palmyra in Class 3 District 6 Final
MONROE CITY — The noise inside Monroe City’s gym Saturday afternoon wasn’t just loud —it was deafening. A packed house, split in black and orange, created a championship atmosphere as top-seeded Palmyra faced second-seeded Monroe City in the Class 3 District 6 boys title game. The pace was fast, the game was physical, and every possession carried weight. In the end, Monroe City rode a hot start and a strong fourth quarter to a 66-46 victory.
Monroe City wasted no time igniting its home crowd, knocking down a pair of three-pointers in the opening minute to set the tone. That early surge fueled a 17-4 first quarter advantage, putting Palmyra in an immediate hole. Hudson Bock and Raeson Miller each scored for the Panthers in the opening frame, battling inside and trying to settle the tempo against the early onslaught.
Palmyra found better rhythm in the second quarter and began chipping away at the deficit. Defensive stops turned into transition opportunities, and the Panthers cut the lead to 10 midway through the period. Ryan McKinney attacked the rim with confidence, and Luke Sheppard added key points to steady the offense. But in the closing moments of the half, Monroe City delivered another momentum swing, burying a three-pointer and converting a steal into two points in the final 30 seconds to stretch the margin to 31-16 at the break.
The third quarter showcased Palmyra’s resolve. The Panthers came out with urgency and outscored Monroe City 18-13 in the period, trimming the lead back to 10. McKinney continued to lead the charge offensively and finished with a team-high 16 points. Palmyra had a chance to close the gap further, but a pair of missed free throws with no time remaining left the score at 44-34 entering the fourth quarter, keeping the comeback within reach but still uphill.
Monroe City responded with its strongest stretch in the final eight minutes, outscoring Palmyra 22-12 in the fourth quarter to seal the championship. The physical play never relented, and the pace remained high, but Monroe City capitalized on transition chances and timely shots to pull away down the stretch.
McKinney led Palmyra with 16 points, followed by Sheppard with seven and Bock with six. Williams added five, Kason Augspurg and Miller each scored four, Pierce White finished with three, and Bryant Horstmeier added one. By quarters, Palmyra scored 4, 12, 18 and 12 for a total of 46, while Monroe City posted 17, 14, 13 and 22 for 66.
Though the final margin favored Monroe City, Palmyra’s run to the district championship game reflected a season built on toughness, growth and competitiveness. In a gym that felt suspended in the moment, the Panthers battled until the final horn in a game that will be remembered for its intensity and atmosphere.
Palmyra seniors are Ashton Lovegreen, Ryan McKinney, Raeson Miller, Luke Sheppard, Brayden Smith and Noah Williams.
