March 28, 1901
John Howell has been nursing a black eye the past two weeks, caused by colliding with a baseball.
There was a meeting at Wither’s Mill last Thursday for the purpose of organizing a telephone company to take in all the postoffices in Miller township and a large number of private residences. The company was formed without trouble and work will be commenced on the line at once.
Miss Maggie Smith will leave shortly for Bozeman, Montana where she will engage in dressmaking.
Tramps and agents are still on the pad and for the life of me, I don’t know which of the two classes are the greatest nuisance.
Candidates beef flowed free Saturday night and as a consequence there were numerous drunks and much noise. The city marshall had his hands full and made a number of arrests.
Thomas Powell who moved to Oklahoma last fall and brought his child back here for burial has gone back after his household goods and will move back to Union township.

March 24, 1926

J.W. Pennewell, a native of Marion county and who for many years made his home in this city, died Saturday in a hospital in El Paso, Texas. He was the son of the late Lemeul Pennewell, and was born on a farm a short distance east of Palmyra.
The cantata, “The Greatest Love” which will be sung by the choir at the First Baptist Church Sunday night, March 28th, closing an evening’s program of music is one of the most tuneful sacred cantatas of the W.W. Petrie Collection.
A Ford touring car belonging to Morelis Barber, of this city, caught fire and was consumed by the flames Wednesday evening near the South River bridge on the Hannibal rock road. The occupant jumped from the burning vehicle just before it burst into flames which quickly consumed it.
Early Friday morning a gasoline stove used in the kitchen of the Rothweiler Cafe got out of working order and took fire. The smoke and flames did considerable damage to the walls and ceilings of the building before it could be extinguished by chemicals.

Akerson Clothing sotre, under the proprietorship of Arthur Akerson, successfully completed its first year of business in Palmyra, Tuesday, March 25.
Barbara Sosey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Sosey, injured her left forearm, Monday, where she accidentally shattered a door glass at the high school.
Mrs. Herbert Foster of Palmyra, who submitted to an operation at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hannibal, last Wednesday, is getting along very nicely.

Mr. and Mrs. Gay Smith this week announced the sale of their floral and gift business to Mr and Mrs. Richard (Gene) Riney of the Taylor community.
Following the same pattern of a juvenile several weeks ago, a Hannibal man sawed his way to freedom from the Marion County Jail Monday, morning according to a report from Sheriff B. J. Rothweiler.
Norman Buckwalter, service manager at Paris & Osbourn Chevrolet Co. in Monroe City, won an all expense paid trip for him and his wife to attend the Chevrolet Service Managers Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Buckwalter earned the trip for his fine performance in the 1975 service activity “Action with Satisfaction”.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Doug Webb of Columbia on Monday, March 22, 1976. He has been named John O’Brien. The mother is the former Kathy O’Brien, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester O’Brien, Route 3, Palmyra.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hurst of 223 E. Ross Street are announcing the birth of a daughter at 11:36 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 1976 in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Hannibal. She has been named Susan Renee.
Nicole Rae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Behring, Route 2, Palmyra, was baptized at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21 in Zion Lutheran Church by the Rev. Charles Gunderman. Godparents were Harlan and Ruth Kaden of St. Louis.

Emily Kothe became only the second Palmyra R-I student to ever win the regional spelling bee in Quincy last week. She now advances to the National competition in Washington, D.C.
Palmyra area residents were given an opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns over the county’s proposed sales tax during the public meeting. Proposition 2001 will take place of Proposition ’95.
The parents of Angie Laine Brown and Brandon James Brocaille announce the engagemenet and upcoming wedding of their children. Brown is the daughter of Dennis and Teresa Brown, Philadelphia; and Brocaille is the
son of Connie Brocaille, Palmyra; and John Brocaille, Hannibal
