Week of the Young Child Highlights Importance of Early Learning in Marion County

Families, child care providers and early childhood educators in Marion County have a reason to celebrate this month as communities across the country observe Week of the Young Child, an annual effort to spotlight the importance of early learning and the role it plays in a child’s development. The 2026 observance, organized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is set for April 11-17.

Week of the Young Child began in 1971 and is now in its 55th year. NAEYC says the observance is meant to raise awareness about the needs of young children and families while recognizing the early childhood programs and services that support them. The group sets the dates and themes, but local communities, schools, child care centers and other organizations typically plan their own activities.

That local focus makes the observance especially relevant in places like Marion County, where access to quality early childhood care and education remains an important community issue. A community planning project focused on Marion and Ralls counties says local leaders have been studying the child care and early education landscape, available resources and the true cost of building a high-quality early childhood system that meets area needs.

In Missouri, early childhood programs are also part of a broader statewide system overseen by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Childhood, which includes child care, home visiting, early learning and early intervention programs for children from birth to age 5. University of Missouri Extension likewise offers early childhood resources aimed at supporting families, teachers and child care providers.

NAEYC’s 2026 observance includes themed days such as Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday. The organization says the week is designed to celebrate learning through music, movement, food, teamwork, creativity and family engagement. It also offers activity guides and promotional materials that local programs can use to tailor the celebration to their own communities.

For Marion County, the week serves as both a celebration and a reminder. It shines a light on the teachers, caregivers and families helping young children learn and grow, while also drawing attention to the ongoing need for strong early childhood opportunities close to home.
