Maywood News

By Rachel Bringer

We have missed some of the area rain showers this week and are hoping the rain finds us in the upcoming days. It seems like most of the planting has been completed, and the
temperatures have been cool in the morning but hot and humid in the afternoons!

South Union Baptist Church gathered for worship today, and Brother Dan’s message was “Looking in the Mirror” from James 1, verses 22-25. Luke accompanied the congregation for “Nothing But the Blood” and “Trust and Obey.” We also sang “Showers of Blessings” in anticipation of a Sunday morning rain, but it did not materialize.

The Sunday School children studied the story of Joseph of Arimathea and made aluminum foil crosses. Mark your calendars for the upcoming patriotic Flag Day Service on June 14th and the special Father’s Day Service on June 21st! Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m.!

Congratulations to the Booher Family on their new Doctor in the family! Tucker Aeschliman of Taylor graduated with his Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Des Moines University and is headed to Denver, Colorado for a prestigious fellowship in his field. Tucker is the son of Tonya (Booher) and Jerry Aeschliman and the grandson of Steve and Carlene Booher of Maywood. Steve and Carlene attended the awards ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa last Thursday, during which Tucker received special
recognition for his capstone project, and they attended the graduation ceremony on Friday.

Luke, Jacob, Elijah, and I attended the Memorial Day Service at the Hannibal American Legion on Memorial Day. The boys helped me set up my music equipment, and all attending were attentive to the thoughtful program honoring the four chaplains who died during World War II after a torpedo hit the ship on which they were serving in the North Atlantic. The chaplains gave their life jackets to other soldiers and were last seen
praying with arms linked as their ship sank.

On Wednesday, May 27th, Luke Shepherd attended the Goat Camp at the Missouri State
Fairgrounds in Sedalia and presented his Powerpoint program entitled, “Grazing Invasives with Goats.” His presentation discussed using goats to graze multiflora rose and Serecia Lezpedeza. More than forty children attended the camp, and Luke particularly enjoyed learning about the dairy goats!

Rick and Mavoureen Meyer attended the FFA banquet in Palmyra last week, and their
granddaughter, Emma Meyer, received the STAR award for Agribusiness for her riding lessons and horse camp business. Mavoureen also attended the horse sale in Palmyra with her grandchildren Emma and Donovan.

I had a nice visit with Martha Griesbaum at the Fabius Community Center on Saturday evening during Janie Triplett’s graduation get-together. I enjoyed hearing Martha’s memories of the Fabius 4-H Club when her son, Daren, and I were just beginning 4-H, and she recalled the 4-H leaders encouraging the children to have good sportsmanship when other club members received awards. She also recalled that the 4-H leaders, including Janie’s grandmother, Mary Triplett, would put a large sheet at the front of
the meeting room after the fair and pin all of the ribbons won by the 4-H members to the sheet. They eventually had to use a queen size sheet to accommodate all of the ribbons! Congratulations to Janie, who will be attending the University of Central Missouri!
