DIXIE LEE MAGGART
Dixie Lee Maggart, age 87, formerly of Browning, MO departed her earthly life and joined her beloved husband and daughter in God’s heavenly kingdom on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
Dixie was born to Moman Lee and Ella Maude (Gregg) Lucy on February 9, 1939 in Parkville, MO. After spending her early years in Parkville the family moved to Purdin, MO when Dixie was 14.
She graduated from Liberty High School, Browning, MO in 1957 and married her high school sweetheart, Keith Maggart on July 20, 1957. After briefly living in Kansas City, MO the couple returned to Browning, MO. Over the next few years they welcomed 4 children. In 1971 they left the farm and lived in Hannibal, MO, Blue Springs, MO, and Des Moines, IA before returning to the Browning area following their retirement.
Dixie was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a caregiver at heart first raising her children and then caring for her mother, aunt and daughter during their final days. During her career she was an office clerk, certified nursing assistant and real estate agent. She was known for her cooking abilities, preparing traditional and non traditional meals for her family and friends. She raised a garden, baked and canned foods but she was never able to master the art of sewing. Those who knew her best knew they could count on her helping out when needed. After her return to the farm she was an active member of the Browning United Methodist Church and the Browning Betterment Association. True to her nature she could usually be found in the church or Betterment kitchens or toting a crockpot to a potluck.
Dixie is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her children Deanna (Joe) Nobis, Dennis (Joanne) Maggart and John (Kori) Maggart. She was a doting grandmother to Jaimee (Chad) Nicolino, Jared Snyder, Joey Nobis, Cole (Judy) and Kyle (Amy) Maggart, Nicole (Daniel) Webb, Jacob (Cindy), Lauryn and Landon Maggart, and Nicholas (Katherine) and Joshua (Samantha) Powgnas. She was overjoyed with the arrival of each of her great grandchildren Samuel, Owen and Julian Nicolino, Macey, Jordan and Blakely Snyder, Annabelle and Augustus Maggart, Harper, Beau and Cole Webb, Vivian and Charlotte Maggart, Penelope and Charlotte Banta, and Everett, Hank, Easton and Kasen Powgnas. She also leaves behind sisters-in-law Shirley Maggart, Sherrill (Andy) Fowler, and Ann Griffith, brother-in-law Lyle Maggart, numerous nieces and nephews and lifelong friends Rosalee Stauffer and Kay Young.
Her greatest sorrow was living without the ones who passed before her; her husband Keith Maggart, daughter Jacqueline (Jackie) Powgnas, son-in-law Bruce Snyder, her parents Moman and Ella Lucy, sister and brother-in-law Diana and Max Bennett, mother and father-in-law J.B. and Eulavieve Maggart, brother-in-law Leon Maggart and sister-in-law Cheryl Maggart.
After the death of her husband in 2016 Dixie developed vascular dementia and over the next 10 years the disease took her memory a little at a time until she was no longer the vibrant energetic person she had once been. Though she no longer remembered the names of those closest to her a little spark of familiarity allowed her to be excited when they visited. Over her final 3 and a half years she was lovingly cared for by the staffs of Brookfield Healthcare and Life Care of Brookfield.
The family will host a Celebration of Life at the Browning United Methodist Church from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026.
They ask that those who loved Dixie to please join them to share memories and honor her life.
Internment will be at the Knifong Cemetery, Browning in a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Dixie may be made to the Knifong Cemetery or the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.
