Tom McCabe, 59, of Edina has taken on a new business venture by leasing the historic barbershop building once owned and operated by the late Stanley and Jeanie Sharp.

The barbershop is located in the center of the south block of the Edina Town Square and is surrounded by the city of Edina’s historic district.

Inside, patrons will be transported back in time and find an assortment of old-time tools of the trade from the Sharps’ Barbershop era and beyond.

McCabe has kept the old-time charm intact and doesn’t plan to change it.

“It’s pretty wild in here,” McCabe told The Edina Sentinel. “I remember having my hair cut here as a child.”

When McCabe took on the venture and leased the shop, one of the first treasures he found was a photo of his father. He also found a yearbook from 1921.

“I’ll probably add a few things, and most of it will stay the same,” McCabe said.

McCabe brought his business to Edina from Macon earlier this year.

“I was hesitant about coming back because I had good business there. Mark Peavler kept the barbershop in Macon open for me for the year that I was in school, and I won’t ever be able to thank him enough for that,” McCabe said. “I took it over for the last three years. That was all part of the plan.”

The long drive to Macon was a factor in deciding to move his business to Edina.

“I’ve become leery about driving to Macon every day. I’ve hit five deer driving back and forth,” McCabe said.

McCabe’s Barbershop has had steady business since opening, relying only on word of mouth.

“I can do about any haircut anybody could want,” McCabe said. “I can do fades, flattops, and I do beard trims.”

Keeping with old-time traditions, McCabe is open for walk-ins Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
