June 5, 1901

P. H. Houlahan, superintendent of the H. St. Joseph railroad was in the city on business Saturday and stated that the company expected at some future day to consolidate the depot and junction in this city. The out of the way location of the depot and junction has long been a drawback to the city, and a more convenient site and better building would be gladly welcomed by our
citizens.
Miss Leora Walden and Mrs. T. E. Walden and babe spent Thursday with Mrs. S. J. Walden of Withers Mill.
Miss Ella and Lena Dibble of Philadelphia were visiting friends and doing business with the merchants in Palmyra Monday.
John Cook and wife left Saturday for a visit to various points in the west. The trip is made in the interest of Mrs. Cook’s health.
Sam W. Dowling and Miss Lucy M. Crouch were married at the residence of
the officiating minister, Rev. T. S. Scott, in Philadelphia, May 30.
Howard Smith, son of F. W. Smith, has been given the position in the Savings Bank formerly held by Arthur Suter.
Norton Saffarrans and wife of Palmyra were visiting Dr. W. J. Tipton and wife last Saturday and Sunday.
Miss Callie Gottman returned home last week from a few days’ visit to her
grandfather, Casper Kempf, and family.
Last Saturday night the barn of Chas. McPike, son of Jeff McPike, of Lewis
County, caught fire in some unknown manner and was burned to the ground.
Leo, the fourteen year old son of John Baxter, living north of town, was thrown from a mule yesterday and his right arm was fractured at the wrist.

June 2, 1926

During on of the recent storms which was attended by considerable thunder
and lightning, two large trees in the front yard of the Albert Schluckebier farm near Ely were struck by the lightning. The lightning was accompanied by a terrific impact which broke a window pane in the house, which was almost a hundred feet away from the trees were struck.

to Andrew L Click will take place at the Mennonite Church east of this city on next Sunday evening at eight o’clock.
Mrs. J.B. Lewis and little son are the guests of her parents at Salisbury, MO.
The Hester Baptist Sunday School will have an ice cream and strawberry
social at Hermann’s Store Saturday night, June 5th.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Smith of Kingston, Arkansas, are the guests of John E.
Hitch and wife, of Fabius township. Mrs. Smith was formerly Miss Lucy Hitch.
Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Stone, of St. Louis, spent several days the first of the week as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Stone, of this city.
Mrs. Katharine Frazier is at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, where she is taking
treatment. She expects to return home the latter part of next week.
Cards reading as follows were received in Palmyra this morning: “Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Marvin Howard announce the marriage of their daughter Jane, to Mr. Terrill William Croft, on Saturday, the eighth day of May, 1926, Merida Yucatan, at home hotel Colon, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.”

The photograph of a young woman in the June 17 issue of Look Magazine has been identified as that of Miss Cleo Frankenbach, of Palmyra, who is employed in Washington, D.C. The picture shows her and another young woman with Mrs. Pauline Chambers, federal “Nurse Consultant” who suggests living quarters and gives information to new residents of the nation’s capital.
The annual reunion of the Kern family was held Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. William Kern in Fabius community, which is the family homestead.
Gerald Donelson, who is stationed at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Arkansas, spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas Donelson and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Russel Chatfield are the parents of a daughter, born at St. Elizabeth hospital in Hannibal, Sunday, June 1.
Paul and Ralph Staus and Sam Seigler, who are employed at Charleston, Indiana, spent the week end here with home folks.
The Palmyra school band will begin its series of weekly concerts on Friday night, June 6, starting at eight o’clock. The concerts will be held on the east front of the courthouse and the band is under the direction of Verne Hallenbeck, instructor in instrumental music in the Palmyra public schools.
Paul Donelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Donelson, of Palmyra, left Monday for St. Louis, where he expected to be inducted into the Marine Corps for four years of service.

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Huckabee this week are completing 20 years of business in the Palmyra community, having purchased Gambles Store in 1956 from Jim Miller. They moved here from Ft. Madison, Iowa.
A new business in Palmyra is having its grand opening this weekend, Saturday and Sunday. It’s Big Ed’s Suds House laundromat located on North Main. Ed Hess, proprietor, invites everyone to come in, look around, and enjoy refreshments.
Philadelphia proved Saturday that a little town can have a big parade and the hoopla that goes with it. All this pomp and circumstance was to officially name Philadelphia the 500th Missouri Bicentennial City.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lovelace entertained at a barbecue Sunday evening in honor of their daughter, Kaye, who was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Sunday.
The family of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L Blickhan of Taylor will host a surprise
open house Saturday, June 19, in honor of their parents’ 30th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Eger are announcing the birth of a daughter on Monday
morning, May 31, 1976, in Blessing Hospital at Quincy, Illinois. She weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces and has been named Jeanie Renee’.
Corinne Fessenden, wife of Ray Fessenden, and Deana Maas, wife of Terry
Maas, both of Palmyra, were graduated from the Blessing Hospital School of Nursing during commencement exercises June 3 in Quincy.

After almost 40 years, the Palmyra Swim Club is struggling to stay afloat.
Back in 1962, the Palmyra Swim Club is a piece of historic tradition of Palmyra, according to Rick Jones, one of the two remaining board members. The Swim Club formed in the early 1960s when Bob Johnson
donated the land to be used. In 1962, the land, which was originally a Cory League baseball field, was covered and the pool was built.
There is at least one bear in the wilds of northeast Missouri, and there are
tracks and an eye-witness account to back it up. Marion County Conservation Agent Matt Markley said a set of bear tracks found in central Marion County have been confirmed and that at least one person has seen a
bear in the general area.
Nicole Rae Behring and Mark Brandon Hatala, both of Kansas City, Missouri, were united in marriage on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Prairie View Baptist Church in Hunnewell, Mo. The bride is the daughter of Pam and Dave Davis, Palmyra; and John Behring, Emden. The
groom is the son of Connie Winkler, Akron, Ohio; and Larry Hatala, Clinton, Ohio.
Sara Nicole Drebes and Brian Matthew Scott announce their engagement.
Drebes is the daughter of Pam Drebes, Monroe City, and the late John Drebes, and Scott is the son of Jim Scott and Paula Scott, both of Troy, Missouri. A 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, wedding at the First Baptist Church
in Monroe City is planned.
Holly Henze received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law on May 19 during the school’s hooding ceremony. She will take the Illinois Bar Examination in July and will join Schnack Law Offices in Quincy. She is the daughter of John and Margie
Van Meter of Lewiston and resided in Palmyra with her husband, Darrell, and her daughters Hilary and Kindra.
