The weather was hot and humid this week, and the rain predicted for this afternoon never appeared. Blackberries are ripening, and the Black-Eyed Susans look so pretty in the fields!
South Union Baptist Church met for worship today, and Brother Dan’s message was entitled “Proud to be an American” from Psalm 33:12. Carl “Boo” Williams was added to the prayer list. The children presented a brief patriotic program by reciting the Preamble to the Constitution, singing the names of the Presidents, and closing with Yankee Doodle Dandy! Veterans Steve Booher and Rick Meyer shared thought-
provoking messages about their military service.
Steve, a former Marine, commented that he was one of fourteen close family members who had served in the military, including his grandfather who served in World War I and his father who served in World War II! Rick, who is an Army veteran, discussed his service in Vietnam and mentioned how he and other Vietnam veterans deeply appreciate those who thank them for their service when they see their veteran’s hats.
Following the patriotic service, the church celebrated Communion and closed the service with the hymn, “Blest Be the Tie.” In Sunday School, the children celebrated with Fourth of July donuts and juice and studied the capture of the Ark of the Covenant by the Philistines from the book of First Samuel. Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m., and all are welcome!

Bobby, Luke, Jacob, Elijah, and I along with many area families attended the fireworks display on Friday night in Palmyra. The
fireworks were spectacular, and the display ended with a large, dramatic fireball! Doug Meyer, director of Palmyra Parks and Recreation, told me that the fireball was a carefully designed special effect created by a controlled burst of ignited fuel by a certified pyrotechnician. Doug
said he had received many great comments about the fireball, and it certainly provided an amazing ending to the show!

Luke, Jacob, Elijah, and I attended the Fourth of July Parade in Hannibal on Saturday. The parade route was very hot, and Jacob and Elijah and several other children enjoyed being sprayed with a garden hose while they waited for the parade to begin!

Happy Birthday to Andy Dickerson on July 9th, and Erma Dee Jones on July 11th! Happy Belated 11th Birthday to Rose Lauber!
