 The Mississippi Valley Council Boy Scouts of America will soon be conducting its 2007 Cub Scout Day Camp program all throughout the areas we serve.

The Canton Area Arts Council and Culver-Stockton College will co-sponsor a summer drama camp for area youth – Staging Alice in Wonderland – from July 30 through August 11.

Independence Day would not be the same without the excitement and entertainment provided by fireworks. However, if necessary precautions are not observed, fireworks can result in serious injuries such as blindness, third degree burns, and permanent scarring.

Across Missouri, June 24 – 30, 2007 will mark Summer Weather Safety Week   — an annual safety campaign during which NOAA’s National Weather Service distributes information on the dangers posed by excessive heat and lightning. The campaign coincides with the National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. 

More than 80 Missouri cities and counties will take part in emergency response exercises simulating a 7.7-magnitude earthquake this week.

Eighty high school juniors participated in Missouri’s forty-fourth annual Missouri Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. June 9-14. Local delegates were (from left): Katie Meinhardt, Kahoka and Ashley Sharpe, Lewistown.

The State Emergency Management Agency will accept Missouri Citizen Corps Program/Council (CCP) grant applications until 5 p.m. July 13, 2007. The FY 2006 CCP Application is on SEMA’s website (www.sema.dps.mo.gov/terrorism.htm). Missouri currently has 85 registered Citizen Corp Programs/Councils.

BROOKFIELD, Mo. – Rural communities in Missouri are losing their young talent to big cities at a rapid rate. A University of Missouri Extension program is trying to help communities overcome this growing problem by promoting entrepreneurship. Brookfield, a town of 5,000 people, is one of five communities chosen to be part of the pilot program called exCEED, Extension Community Economic and Entrepreneurial Development.

Jerad Harness, of Warsaw, Illinois was the winner of the 2007 KICK-FM Colgate Country Showdown held Saturday, June 16th, at Upper Moorman Park in Quincy, IL.  Harness performed in front of a crowd of nearly 2000 enthusiastic country music fans. The popular Tri-State entertainers “Mad Hoss Jackson” also performed and served as back-up band for the contestants.

The 2007 University of Missouri Pork Institute, sponsored by the University of Missouri – Columbia and the Missouri Pork Association, was held June 11 through June 13 in Columbia. The Institute was a three day educational event for high school students interested in the pork industry.
